Communities living around the Kaptagat Forest have expressed strong support for the fencing of the forest as the Kaptagat Integrated Conservation Programme (KICP) prepares to launch its second phase of conservation. Following the successful restoration of the Kaptagat Forest ecosystem, KICP is shifting its focus to protecting restored areas, strengthening biodiversity conservation, enhancing water catchment protection, and promoting sustainable livelihoods through community participation. Forest fencing is expected to curb illegal encroachment, reduce human-wildlife conflicts, and safeguard one of Kenya’s most important water towers while ensuring the long-term success of ongoing restoration efforts. The initiative reflects KICP’s commitment to community-led conservation, climate resilience, and sustainable natural resource management in Elgeyo Marakwet County.
