The 10th Edition of the Kaptagat Restoration Programme celebrated ten years of restoring the Kaptagat Forest ecosystem through collaborative conservation, community empowerment, and sustainable livelihoods. Held on 11 July 2026 under the theme “10 to 20: Restore. Sustain. Transform.”, the programme completed the restoration of the final 22 hectares of degraded forest at the Chebior grassland in Sabor Forest Station, bringing the total restored area to 1,284.2 hectares and more than 1.7 million trees planted since 2017. The achievement marked the successful restoration of the entire degraded Kaptagat Forest ecosystem and reinforced Kenya’s commitment to climate resilience, biodiversity conservation, and the national goal of planting 15 billion trees by 2032.
The milestone event was presided over by Deputy President Prof. Kithure Kindiki and attended by Head of Public Service Felix Koskei, National Treasury Principal Secretary and KICP Patron Dr. Chris Kiptoo, Medical Services Principal Secretary Dr. Ouma Oluga, Elgeyo Marakwet Governor Wisley Rotich, Members of Parliament, county leaders, development partners, community forest associations, conservation organizations, corporate sponsors, athletes led by Eliud Kipchoge, and thousands of local residents and volunteers. Their participation highlighted the strong partnerships between government, the private sector, conservation organizations, and local communities in safeguarding one of Kenya’s most important water towers for future generations.
