On July 1, 2023, President Dr. William Ruto took part in the innovative 1:59 Tree Planting Challenge during the 7th Annual Kaptagat Tree Planting Campaign, symbolically mirroring Eliud Kipchoge’s historic 1:59 marathon record. In just one minute and fifty-nine seconds, thousands of participants united to plant an impressive 500,000 trees, making it one of Kenya’s most impactful symbolic reforestation moments. This event highlighted the intersection of climate action, sports inspiration, and community engagement, reinforcing Kenya’s commitment to increasing national tree cover and combating climate change.
The Kaptagat Forest Restoration Initiative, launched in 2017 under the leadership of Dr. Chris Kiptoo, Principal Secretary of the National Treasury and patron of the Kaptagat Integrated Conservation Programme (KICP), has become a leading model of community-driven ecosystem restoration. Since its inception, the program has successfully rehabilitated 1,284.2 hectares of degraded forest, restoring critical water catchments and enhancing biodiversity in the North Rift region. This long-term effort not only strengthens environmental sustainability but also fosters community empowerment, livelihood support, and climate resilience across Kenya’s key forest landscapes.
