9th Edition of the Kaptagat Restoration and Livelihoods Programme was held at Simotwo Boys High School. The event was graced by H.E. President William Samoei Ruto, Patron PS Chris Kiptoo, CS Debra Barasa, CS Kipchumba Murkomen, Governor Wisley Rotich, Governor Dr. Jonathan Bii Chelilim, Principal secretaries, Members of Parliament, Members of County assembly, amongst other dignitaries
The journey that began in 2017 as a modest tree-planting initiative has now restored over 2,700 hectares, empowered more than 28,000 households, and introduced life-changing innovations such as fruit farming, clean energy, and dairy improvement—all anchored on the belief that conservation transforms lives.
This year’s edition was marked by major milestones, including the commissioning of Etio Dam in Keiyo North, the groundbreaking of Tirwane Water Project in Keiyo South, tree and avocado planting in Simotwo, and the distribution of dairy cows, assorted fruit and tea seedlings, and milk coolers to local farmers.
H.E. the President also presided over the Kaptagat Forest Run awards ceremony, where KSh 2 million in prize money was awarded to outstanding athletes.
The impact is real. In Tembelio Location, for instance, farmers sold 60 tonnes of avocado this year alone, earning KSh 4.8 million. A single acre at peak can yield up to KSh 1.6 million annually. These are not just trees—they are school fees, dignity, and a future for our people.
