The inaugural Sabor Tree Planting event, launched on June 27, 2017, marked a major milestone in the restoration of the Kaptagat Ecosystem. Held at Chepkosom Primary School near Sabor Forest Station in Elgeyo Marakwet County, the event brought together key leaders including Principal Secretary for Environment and Forestry Ms. Margaret Mwakima and Dr. Chris Kiptoo, Principal Secretary for Trade. With support from the county governments of Uasin Gishu and Elgeyo Marakwet, community forest associations (CFAs), and regional stakeholders, the campaign successfully planted 50,000 indigenous tree seedlings across 50 hectares in the Bombo catchment. Organized by the Sabor Community Forest Association (SACOFA), the event laid the foundation for an annual afforestation movement focused on reversing deforestation, protecting water towers, and promoting climate resilience in Kenya’s North Rift region.
