The Seventh Edition of the Kaptagat Tree Planting Campaign was held on July 1, 2023, and was graced by His Excellency Dr. William Samoei Ruto, President of the Republic of Kenya, as the Chief Guest. He was accompanied by Prime Cabinet Secretary Wycliffe Musalia Mudavadi, Cabinet Secretary for Roads and Public Works Kipchumba Murkomen, and other high-level dignitaries. This edition marked a bold step forward in climate action, aiming to rehabilitate 400 hectares across Kessup, Sabor, Kaptagat, Penon, and Kipkabus forest blocks, while distributing 100,000 avocado fruit tree seedlings to support sustainable livelihoods through agroforestry. The campaign continues to integrate forest restoration, community engagement, and economic empowerment within the Kaptagat ecosystem.

In parallel, the Eldoret–Iten Water Fund (EIWF) launched a large-scale tree-growing program targeting the Cherangany and Elgeyo Hills landscapes, with an ambitious goal of restoring 2,500 hectares and distributing 200,000 avocado seedlings, contributing to the growth of over 3.78 million trees within the Cherangany Hills Water Tower during the current planting season. The Kaptagat Forest Ecosystem, internationally recognized for its dual role as a watershed and training ground for world-class athletes, has gained prominence for providing vital ecological, environmental, and socio-economic benefits to surrounding communities. To further enhance the region’s resilience and reduce environmental pressure, two major conservation projects were initiated, reinforcing Kaptagat’s role as a flagship model for landscape restoration, climate mitigation, and sustainable development in Kenya.
