The Sixth Edition of the Kaptagat Tree Planting Campaign was launched on July 15, 2022, at the 50.8-hectare adopted site in Kaptagat Forest by Dr. Eliud Kipchoge, E.G.H., under the Trillion Trees Initiative. This landmark event demonstrated Kenya’s growing commitment to environmental restoration and climate action. The campaign successfully rehabilitated 250 hectares across five forest stations through the planting of 300,000 assorted indigenous tree seedlings, supported by a combined investment of Ksh 9 million. In addition to forest restoration, 40,000 avocado seedlings were distributed to selected farmers across the Kaptagat landscape to support agroforestry and enhance community livelihoods.

Newly launched projects such as the “Project Greening Kaptagat” significantly boosted the initiative’s impact by contributing to the rehabilitation of 220 hectares within gazetted forest reserves. Through support from WWF, an additional 80 hectares of commercial woodlots were established to promote sustainable timber production, while 200 hectares of high-value fruit trees were planted in surrounding community farmlands. These strategic interventions integrated conservation with economic empowerment, positioning the Kaptagat Ecosystem as a model for sustainable landscape restoration, climate resilience, and community-driven environmental stewardship in Kenya’s North Rift region.
