The Cherangani Hills Water Tower, one of Kenya’s five major water towers, spans over 120,000 hectares and is vital for sustaining rivers like Nzoia, Turkwel, and Kerio. At the heart of this ecosystem lies the Kaptagat Forest, covering more than 20,000 hectares across Elgeyo Marakwet, and supported by annual restoration efforts under the Kaptagat Integrated Conservation Programme (KICP). Since its launch in 2017, the Kaptagat Tree Planting Editions have restored thousands of hectares, planted millions of seedlings, and integrated sports like cycling and marathons to raise awareness about climate action and forest conservation. This multi-stakeholder approach, led by the Ministry of Environment and Forestry, Kenya Forest Service (KFS), and local communities, continues to promote sustainable land use, biodiversity, water security, and community livelihoods across the Cherangany-Elgeyo landscape.
