Cash Crops to Drive the Next Phase of Kaptagat Forest Conservation

The Kaptagat Integrated Conservation Programme (KICP) is entering a new phase of environmental conservation focused on sustainable livelihoods through cash crops and agroforestry. Following the successful restoration of the Kaptagat Forest ecosystem, KICP is now empowering local communities to grow high-value crops and trees that generate income while reducing pressure on forest resources. This integrated conservation approach strengthens climate resilience, protects critical water catchments, supports biodiversity, and improves household livelihoods across Elgeyo Marakwet County. By linking economic empowerment with environmental stewardship, KICP continues to demonstrate how community-led conservation can secure the future of one of Kenya’s most important water towers and contribute to the national goal of growing 15 billion trees by 2032.
